With deep sorrow, we commemorate Prof. Daver Yeker, a visionary leader in pediatric surgery, who passed away on February 6, 2025. A pioneer in Turkey, he was instrumental in establishing pediatric surgery services at Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine, shaping the field through his dedication to surgical excellence, patient care, and the training of future generations.
Prof. Daver Yeker’s contributions extended far beyond national borders. Committed to advancing pediatric surgery globally, he conducted research at Liverpool Alder Hey Children’s Hospital (1978) and Sheffield Children’s Hospital (1981), integrating cutting-edge surgical techniques into pediatric surgical practice. With over 200 national and international publications, he played a key role in disseminating knowledge and fostering international collaboration.
A passionate advocate for education, he mentored countless pediatric surgeons, instilling in them not only surgical expertise but also the highest ethical standards and a deep commitment to their patients. He served as President of the Turkish Association of Pediatric Surgery (six years), Board Member of WOFAPS (six years), and President of the Mediterranean Association of Pediatric Surgeons (two years), working tirelessly to strengthen international training programs and promote the exchange of expertise. As an Editorial Consultant for the European Journal of Pediatric Surgery, he further contributed to the scientific advancement of the field.
Beyond his remarkable career as a dedicated and accomplished surgeon, Prof. Daver Yeker was also a devoted family man, cherishing a joyful life with his beloved wife, Pediatric Anesthesiologist Yüksel Yeker, his children Ömür, Nadide, and Mahmut, and grandchildren Defne, Talat, Kartal, Bora, and Peri.
His compassion, mentorship, and dedication to his patients defined his career, while his unwavering commitment to excellence and education leaves a lasting legacy, inspiring pediatric surgeons worldwide to follow in his footsteps.
