About Sharon Cox
After completing his undergraduate training at the University of Natal Medical School, Professor Shaik undertook specialisation in General Surgery and further training in Vascular Surgery in Durban.
He then completed the Advanced Management Programme in Health Care Management through the UK based, Manchester Business School and in 1999 was awarded the Fogarty International
Fellowship in Medical Informatics, Telemedicine and Robotics. He undertook this training at Tufts University, Harvard University and MIT in Boston, USA. During this time he was fortunate enough to be exposed to early fetal surgical interventions and artificial intelligence that were being explored in the City. He then returned to South Africa and completed his subspecialisation in Paediatric Surgery and followed this with training in Foetal and Neonatal Medicine in Nice, France and further training in Belgium. He returned to full time academic practice in 2014 and was appointed Head of the Division of Paediatric Surgery and Associate Professor at Stellenbosch University in February 2014.
He has subsequently returned to Private Practice in KwaZulu-Natal and is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in the Departments of Paediatric Surgery at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He is currently serving his third term as the President of the College of Paediatric Surgeons of South Africa and is also a Director of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa and the Honorary Registrar of the Education Committee of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa. Professionally, he is the current President of the South African Association of Paediatric Surgeons.
